How to Read the Data

When calculating the achievement gaps for each year, I used the Washington Assessment of Student Learning passing percentage number for White students and subtracted the passing percentage number for African American and Hispanic students, which gave me the difference (achievement gap percentage).

Example:

Franklin Pierce School District
7th Grade Math

White passing percentage

1997-98     11.6%
2004-05    47.6%

African American passing percentage

1997-98     2.5%
2004-05    20.0%

11.6% - 2.5% = 9.1% Achievement Gap 1998

47.6% - 20.0% =  27.6% Achievement Gap 2005

Note: if there is a negative percentage that means the achievement gap was in favor of the group with the negative percentage.
